THE VEGAN SOCIETY – PRESS RELEASE -- Nestle guilty of misleading consumers with dishonest advertising -- “EAT YOUR GREENS AND NO MORE PORKIES†Vegan Society tells Dairy Giant
In a latterday version of the David and Goliath story, a complaint by registered educational charity the Vegan Society against an advertorial by giant multinational dairy company Nestle has been upheld by the Advertising Standards Authority.
The offending advertorial on an AOL women’s page contained the blatantly misleading statement: “Dairy Products – essential for healthy bones†and was found to have breached the code of advertising practice on three major grounds: substantiation, honesty and truthfulness.
The Vegan Society’s complaint centred on the misuse of the word “essentialâ€, implying that there was no other adequate source - a statement likely to distress and mislead not only those who take no dairy products for ethical reasons but the increasing number of people (currently some 3 million in the UK) with problems digesting milk.
The Society also provided compelling evidence on the adequacy of an animal free diet based on information from the World Health Organisation and the work of leading epidemiologists.
Nestle offered no evidence to support its claim and admitted that there were perfectly adequate sources of calcium other than dairy products [e.g. green leafy vegetables, tofu, seeds, nuts and fortified soya milk for further information, see article on diet and bone health].
Vegan Society Chair Alex Bourke comments: “This is a real example of David triumphing over the might of Goliath. Nestle used a misleading claim to promote a product when there is absolutely no evidence that dairy products are essential and we are delighted that the ASA Council agrees.†Increasing numbers of people are adopting a vegan lifestyle – including celebrities such as Bryan Adams, Steve Jobs, Moby, Benjamin Zephaniah and many others - out of concern for their own health and that of people in the developing world, the plight of the animals and the destruction of the environment we all share.
THE VEGAN SOCIETY: The UK has 3 million vegans and vegetarians, a further 3 million with problems digesting milk and millions more who avoid particular animal products for ethical, health or religious reasons. A registered educational charity founded in 1944, the Vegan Society supports all who wish to replace or reduce animal products in their diet and lifestyle. It provides expert advice to the media, doctors, dietitians, caterers and food producers and to authorities dealing with food labelling, additives, school meals and other public health issues. It is relied upon for its authoritative nutrition publications, animal-free shopping guide and trusted Sunflower trade mark. Ethical vegans also avoid wool, silk, leather and other animal-derived products. For further information see The Vegan Society

Vegan headline on front page of The Independent
Thanks to the Vegan Society and others in the vegan community, a positive vegan story has made it to the front page headlines of today's Independent. "An ethical diet: The joy of being vegan" looks particularly wonderful in print and read by 700,000 people. We can all build on this by responding quickly to it in the media, and spreading the word.
